Mara More: Wellness/Food-Demo

Mara More will share her research and experience of natural-wellness and raw vegan nutrition and demonstrate how to make a favorite easy smoothie and salad on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 6:30pm at The Microsoft Store Theater, 800 Boylston Street, Boston, MA. maramore.com See more here: http://www.meetup.com/RawBoston/events/83243522/

Update: I gave a free talk and easy food-prep demo at the Microsoft Store Theater at the Prudential Center in Boston! All seats were full. Lots of “logistics” involved. lol. I parked the company vehicle from my job right after work and walked to the train station with two gallon coconut oil buckets and a back-pack full of bananas, aloe, romaine, orange, avocado, paper plates, forks, napkins, cups, and an inversion blender (I did not think of using my suitcase on wheels that day). I took the train from Haverhill to Boston North Station, then Green Line subway to Copley and walked about half mile to the Prudential. I got there very shortly before 6:30pm and some people were already waiting. I gave a short talk, did the food demo, cleaned up, caught the train, walked to the vehicle, and drove home. I think people liked my talk and food demo. Rick Williams, Linda Balliro, Paul Something, some college students, some people my age, an older man, and more were there. It was fun for me and glad I pulled it together last minute since the speaker cancelled considering how busy my life is between my “real” job and home/biz. lol. I had stored the romaine in a cooler with freezer packs because I leave my house at 2pm. Typical of me, I forgot to ask someone to take a few photos because I usually just enjoy living in the moment, but will remember next time.

Pam Popper & Melanie Joy

Dr. Pam Popper’s newest book, Solving America’s Healthcare Crisis, goes beyond diet advice and covers myths about protein, supplementation, the role of genes, and other related issues. Information about how nutrition affects many different conditions and stories of people who have regained their health with diet are included, along with details about issues like public policy, school food, and how to reduce the financial burden of health care for employers. This book is a blueprint for how to save the country billions of dollars in unnecessary costs per year and help Americans to improve their quality of life through optimal health. At Dr. Pam Poppers talk, I learned a cool natural wellness tip: “Every hour slept before midnight is like two hours of sleep.” So for example if I sleep from 9pm til 2am that is like getting 8 hours of sleep! Wow! :) She also said that there is a very high percentage of false positives in cancer screenings and overall a very low cancer cure rate from medical doctors but they manipulate the figures to make it sound better. She says to eat fruits and veggies to manage disease. :)

In Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism social psychologist, Dr. Melanie Joy, offers an absorbing look at why and how humans can so wholeheartedly devote ourselves to certain animals and then allow others to suffer needlessly, especially those slaughtered for our consumption. She explores the many ways we numb ourselves and disconnect from our natural empathy for farmed animals. She coins the term “carnism” to describe the belief system that has conditioned us to eat certain animals and not others. Joy investigates factory farming, exposing how cruelly the animals are treated, the hazards that meatpacking workers face, and the environmental impact of raising 10 billion animals for food each year. Controversial and challenging, this book will change the way you think about food forever.

I had the pleasure of seeing the bright and beautiful Dr. Pam Popper, PhD, ND and Dr. Melanie Joy, PhD, EdM speak at The Boston Vegetarian Food Festival on Sun., Oct 28, 2012, at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center, 1350 Tremont Street, Boston, MA. Wild Spinach and Day-Lily

2012.07.08.0037aWildSpDL

I love raw wild spinach and raw wild day-lily and they are a super amazingly delicious flavor combination when eaten together! I know from my research that wild foods are the most nutritious and are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that have been shown in many studies to prevent and reverse cancer and wild spinach and day-lily make me feel amazing immediately! I am lucky that they grow in my yard for free! I just have to pick them, eat them, and enjoy! I urge you to go foraging or dig up a part of your yard and let nature plant wild edibles for you, get the book Edible Wild Plants to use to identify them, try some, and enjoy!

Milton Mills, M.D.

dr__milton_mills-150x150The major causes of death in Western countries are cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Abundant medical research linking these diseases to dietary and lifestyle factors, guidelines advanced by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the Surgeon General, among others, counsel Americans to sharply reduce animal foods consumed and replace them with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In effect, they are recommending a more plant-based diet, which begs the question: Are humans designed to eat meat?

Milton Mills, M.D. has an extensive background in nutrition research, focusing on the role nutrition plays in the development of chronic diseases. He is a graduate of the Stanford University School of Medicine and is a practicing physician in the Washington, D.C. area. He also serves as the Associate Director of Preventive Medicine for the health policy group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. He has lectured extensively throughout North America and is a Nutrition Health Education Video Spokesperson for the Discovery Health Channel.
