My veganic compost works well!

Groundwork & MARC

I had fun going to Meetup events with my friend, Eddie. First we went to “Learn How To Compost” by Lee Dwyer of Groundwork Somerville at Somerville Community Growing Center where we learned about indoor & outdoor composting with about twenty other gardeners. I’ve kept an outdoor compost pile since 1991 and learned from my Dad who composted grass clippings, weeds, leaves, and fruit and vegetable scraps. Then we went to Whole Foods and bought some raw fresh figs which were very delicious! Next we went to Boston University’s Marsh Chapel for a “Vegan Standout” with MARC, the “Barnyard Trio”, and about twenty vegans. The events were posted on Boston Raw Food Meetup and Boston Vegan Meetup.

Genetic Roulette, by Jeffrey M. Smith, is a truly informative and awakening book about the dangers of genetically modified foods and the easy steps to take to avoid them. According to the film: Americans get sick more often than Europeans and people in other industrialized countries and they are getting sicker and there is a correlation of use of GMO with increase in disease rates. The science behind genetic engineering is haphazard, risky, unregulated, and untested for long term use. Plants have been engineered to either tolerate being sprayed with herbicide and not die or produce their own toxic insecticide that breaks open the stomach and kill bugs that eat the plant. The GMO industry claims it has no affect on humans, but there has been an increase is stomach disorders and many other diseases.

There are only nine GMO food crops: soy, corn (not popcorn), cottonseed (for oil), canola (for oil), sugar beets (for sugar), papaya (Hawaiian and Chinese), zucchini, yellow crookneck squash, and alfalfa (for hay) however their derivatives are found in many processed and packaged foods. These can all be avoided by simply buying only foods labelled “Organic” or “Non-GMO”. This is easy to do on The 80/10/10 Diet by Dr. Douglas Graham.

Organic

The Environmental Working Group’s EWG’s 2012 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ says, “Eat your fruits and vegetables! The health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure. Use EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides™ to reduce your exposures as much as possible, but eating conventionally-grown produce is far better than not eating fruits and vegetables at all. The Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ will help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues and are the most important to buy organic. You can lower your pesticide intake substantially by avoiding the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least contaminated produce. This year we have expanded the Dirty Dozen™ with a Plus category to highlight two crops — green beans and leafy greens, meaning, kale and collard greens – that did not meet traditional Dirty Dozen ™criteria but were commonly contaminated with highly toxic organophosphate insecticides. These insecticides are toxic to the nervous system and have been largely removed from agriculture over the past decade. But they are not banned and still show up on some food crops. Commodity crop corn used for animal feed and biofuels is almost all produced with genetically modified (GMO) seeds, as is some sweet corn sold for human consumption. Since GMO sweet corn is not labeled as such in US stores, EWG advises those who have concerns about GMOs to buy organic sweet corn.”

1st Boston Raw-food Meetup

The first event of the Boston Raw Food Meetup group took place at Organic Garden Cafe in Beverly on Nov 10, 2007 at 11:30am. About twenty people attended and it was very fun to meet fellow rawfoodies. I made some long-lasting friendships.

RAW

In 1990 I discovered I have a secondary food allergy to cooked cow milk, went vegan, began reading about food allergies, and began elimination challenge testing as suggested by my holistic medical doctor, Dr. Ward of Holistic Family Practice, Newburyport, MA. Eventually I found out I have secondary food allergies to cooked milk, wheat, soy, and corn – the four most common food allergens. Two books inspired me to become a 100% raw-foodist on April 1, 1999: Allergies – Disease in Disguise by Carolee Bateson Koch and The Essene Gospel of Peace by Edmond Bordeaux Szekeley. After two months of being all raw, I felt so good that I never went back to being a cooked-foodist and my life keeps getting better and better. :) Click on images for more information.
