Poison Ivy & Jewel Weed (cause/cure)

Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy

Jewel Weed

Jewel Weed – Click image for more info.

Poison Ivy (photo left) grows in my yard by the lake and I’m allergic. Because I’ve had severe cases and once made it worse by treating it wrong, I’ll share what I do and don’t do if I get it and how to avoid it. If I accidentally contact poison ivy I apply either Jewel Weed juice – stops itch instantly with one application!, Aloe Juice, or Aloe Gel; wash with Baby Wipes or COLD WATER and mild soap (optional) like Clearly Natural; wear loose lightweight clothing of natural materials like cotton or hemp or no clothing if possible; and wash clothing, bed-sheets, towels, and footwear because the oil can stay on things and keep “giving”. The Poison Ivy plant contains a caustic oil that upon contact to skin can cause an allergic reaction.

Jewel Weed (photo right) juice stops poison ivy itch instantly and is easy to identify by it’s unique yellow or orange flowers. (See Edible Wild Plants.) I read that jewel weed always grows near poison ivy and it does grow in my yard beside the poison ivy. How cool is that? So, I just break off a piece of jewel weed, gently break open the stem, rub the juice on my skin, and the poison ivy itch stops instantly with one application! Amazing! :) Nature provides a solution to every challenge if you know where to look nearby. :) (Click images for more information.)

I avoid getting poison ivy by identifying it and staying away from it. Poison ivy is characterized by clusters of three oval shaped leaves (photo above left). They vary in size and are green, but can have some red mixed in.

If I get poison ivy, I DO NOT scratch as it can potentially break the skin and cause infection under the skin and also can spread the oil and cause more itching; DO NOT use hot water because it will open the skin pores and force the oil deeper into the skin and also spread it around; and DO NOT use coconut oil! I did that once and made my forearms blow up really scarey and I had to soak my arms in a dish pan full of ice and water as often as I could stand or had time for to bring down the swelling and remove the poison ivy oil.

I recently got poison ivy while trying to set up a temporary mooring for my aluminum canoe in the lake when suddenly the sky got dark and it started to thunder so I quickly pulled my canoe up onto the banking at the bottom of the hill where I don’t usually go and stepped in poison ivy. In that moment I decided the threat of being struck by lightening while standing in a lake touching an aluminum canoe was worse than poison ivy especially since I know about jewel weed. :)

80/10/10Edible Wild PlantsIn 1980’s I was into using homeopathic remedies and had success using Rhu Tox to prevent getting poison ivy; however I had to take it once a week or month (I forget) from March to November and eventually noticed it seemed to bother my stomach perhaps because homeopathic remedies in pellet form are cooked cow-milk based which I was unaware of at the time. They are an alternative for expectant and breast-feeding mothers; however I now prefer whole “lifestyle-therapies”, nutritional-therapies, and natural-remedies such as those found in The 80/10/10 Diet by Dr. Douglas Graham, The Sunfood Diet Success System by David Wolfe, Green For Life by Victoria Boutenko, Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide by Elias & Dykeman.

HEAL YOUR BODY – The Mental Causes for Physical Illness and the Metaphysical Way to Overcome Them by Louise L Hay says that poison ivy is probably caused by feeling defenseless and open to attack and the new thought pattern to affirm is, “I am powerful, safe, and secure. All is well.”

Here is a music video for fun; but I prefer Jewel Weed over calamine lotion. I suggest getting up to dance because exercise helps to strengthen the immune system and build a strong healthy body. :) Maybe I will make a video of me dancing to this song? lol.

811 WILD SQ FT SPROUTI’ve been a low-income divorced single-mom vegan since 1990, raw-vegan since 1999, and high high-carb low-fat fruity-raw-vegan since 2010; so here is my response to the question, “How much does it cost to be raw vegan?” I use cronpmeter.com (set to LFRV) to make sure I eat enough calories. Bananas are only $.50/lb (50 cents per pound). There are about 4 bananas per pound. 1 banana is 100 calories so 14 bananas (2 bunches or two 48 oz blender full) have 1,400 calories for $1.75 (14/4=3.5lbs x $.50) multiplied by 7 is $12.25 per week. (Dates cost $4/lb which have 1,279 calories. $28/week.) Walnuts are $5.49/lb(32T) and I eat 2T/day which have 82 calories and costs $.34/day or $2.40/week. A bag of three organic romaine hearts or organic celery or box of organic baby spinach or arugula is about $3 and half pound of organic hemp seeds or organic pumpkin seeds is about $3. I add whatever else I can afford for variety; ie: melon, mango, papaya, tomato, raisins, cucumber, yam, oats, legumes, wild rice, etc. Wild Autumn Berries grow in my yard for free! :) The book, Edible Wild Plants, helps me find free edible wild plant foods. The Sprouting Book helps me grow my own sprouts very affordably. Square Foot Gardening helps me grow some of my own food. The book, The 80/10/10 Diet, and the online community, 30 Bananas A Day, provide valuable information and support. The high-carb low-fat fruity-raw-vegan or vegan lifestyle is affordable, nutritious, and sustainable! :)

Groundwork & MARC

I had fun going to Meetup events with my friend, Eddie. First we went to “Learn How To Compost” by Lee Dwyer of Groundwork Somerville at Somerville Community Growing Center where we learned about indoor & outdoor composting with about twenty other gardeners. I’ve kept an outdoor compost pile since 1991 and learned from my Dad who composted grass clippings, weeds, leaves, and fruit and vegetable scraps. Then we went to Whole Foods and bought some raw fresh figs which were very delicious! Next we went to Boston University’s Marsh Chapel for a “Vegan Standout” with MARC, the “Barnyard Trio”, and about twenty vegans. The events were posted on Boston Raw Food Meetup and Boston Vegan Meetup.

Carbs keep you slim and Fats add FAT.

See what Durianrider says here: Why Carbs keep you slim and Fats add FAT.

The Starch Solution: Eat the Foods You Love, Regain Your Health, and Lose the Weight for Good! by John McDougall, M.D. and Mary McDougall is a bestselling author’s groundbreaking eating plan that challenges the notion that starch is unhealthy. From Atkins to Dukan, the fear-mongering about carbs over the past few decades has reached a fever pitch; the mere mention of a starch-heavy food is enough to trigger a cavalcade of shame and longing. In The Starch Solution, bestselling diet doctor and board-certified internist John A. McDougall, MD, and his kitchen-savvy wife, Mary, turn the notion that starch is bad for you on its head. The Starch Solution is based on a simple swap: fueling your body primarily with carbohydrates rather than proteins and fats. This will help you lose weight and prevent a variety of ills. Fad diets come and go, but Dr. McDougall has been a proponent of the plant-based diet for decades, and his medical credibility is unassailable. He is one of the mainstay experts cited in the bestselling and now seminal China Study—called the “Grand Prix of epidemiology” by the New York Times. But what The China Study lacks is a plan. Dr. McDougall grounds The Starch Solution in rigorous scientific fact and research, giving readers easy tools to implement these changes into their lifestyle with a 7-Day Quick Start Plan and 100 delicious recipes. This book includes testimonials from among the hundreds Dr. McDougall has received, including people who have lost more than 125 pounds in mere months as well as patients who have conquered life-threatening illnesses such as diabetes and cardiac ailments.
